Reading have completed the signing of Charlie Adam, with the experienced midfielder joining the Royals on a one-year deal.

The former Scotland international was a free agent after leaving Stoke City in the summer but he has now joined the Berkshire outfit who confirmed his arrival on their official site this evening.

Jose Gomes has been desperate for reinforcements as he looks to build on his solid start as manager but a soft transfer embargo meant he was restricted in terms of incomings for much of the summer.

However, that has now been lifted and Adam will be a welcome addition to what is a young squad.

Chief Executive Nigel Howe recognised that and believes that the ex-Liverpool man will add a lot to the group because of what he has done in the game.

A player with both Championship and Premier League experience, not to mention pedigree at European and international level, Charlie Adam can play a very valuable role within what is a relatively young first team squad at Reading. I look forward to seeing him represent the Royals this season.”

The 33-year-old played just 12 league games for the Potters last season.

The Verdict

This isn't the most inspiring signing from Reading as Adam has appeared to struggle a lot in recent years, although the same could be said for many at Stoke.

There's no doubt that he has real quality in his left-foot though and his experience is another positive when you consider that many of the Royals squad won't have played at the top level like he has.

So, there are positives and negatives to this deal and it's ultimately down to Adam to prove he still has a lot to offer.

If he can get back to anywhere near his best then there's no doubting that he will add something to this team.
