Reading manager Jaap Stam has expressed his thoughts on his side's ability to do deals in the transfer market, in this summer's window, as per Sky Sports

Following the Royals' defeat on penalties to Huddersfield in last season's showpiece Championship play-off final. Stam has been in the market all summer long, looking for players who can see his side go one better in the coming season.

However, he has not brought in a huge number of new arrivals, although he has secured the signings of experienced goalkeeper Vito Mannone, to replace the outgoing Ali Al Habsi, who was first choice last season, striker Jon Dadi Bodvarsson from Wolves and midfielder Pelle Clement from Ajax.

Speaking about his side's transfer activity, Stam said, "I am in talks of course with the owners, the technical director and the CEO, on getting players in. Everybody knows the type of players we want to have, and we've got names as well but it's not easy to get players in, because of the market and how it is; because [of] the money that's been spent, the wages that players are asking for as well."

Stam continued, "we ended up third in the league [last season] but that doesn't mean that we can pay very, very big wages... we can't do that, so we need to find a way to get players of a certain quality in, that can make a difference for us."

The Verdict:

Stam's comments illuminate the varying budgets on offer in the second tier, thanks in no small part to parachute payments and the large sums that recently-relegated clubs are still able to get their hands on.

Stam shows that he has a commitment to the club to not recklessly overspend in order to make the additions that he wants, and should be lauded for that.

However, his words do show just how tough it might be for Reading to replicate their third place finish from last campaign.
