Reading ahead of Birmingham and Ipswich in the race to sign International striker

Reading have been installed as 7/2 favourites with Sky Bet to sign Newcastle United’s Daryl Murphy, despite the Royals facing competition from Birmingham City and Ipswich Town to sign the striker, reports Get Reading.

Following Newcastle’s promotion from the Sky Bet Championship last season, Murphy has accepted he may not feature in Rafa Benitez’s plans and that a move this summer could be a real possibility.

Reading have emerged as favourites to sign the experienced Irishman this summer, as Jaap Stam prepares for another push for promotion, after the Royals missed out on a Premier League return in the play-off final last season.

Birmingham are also keen on Murphy, as well as Ipswich, who sold the striker to Newcastle in a multi-million pound transfer last summer.

Despite finding himself behind Dwight Gayle at St James’ Park last season, Murphy played a huge role in Newcastle’s promotion to the Premier League last season, scoring vitally important goals for Benitez’s side.

From his 15 Championship appearances, Murphy scored five goals for the Magpies.

The 34-year old has shown his ability in the Championship when given an extended run of games, emerging as Ipswich’s main man between 2011 and 2016 and scoring 61 goals during his time at Portman Road.

Reading fans… Would Murphy be a good signing for your club? Can you see Stam completing a deal for the striker? Let us know your thoughts!
