Gabby Agbonlahor has revealed how he was prepared to play for Aston Villa for free after his former club's struggles this summer.

Villa's play-off final defeat to Fulham plunged them into a real financial crisis and at one stage even the future of the club was up in the air.

Therefore, signing players was obviously out of the question for Steve Bruce, and PA Sport have revealed how Agbonlahor offered to play for free to help his former side.

However, the takeover involving billionaire pair Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris went through not long after which allowed Villa to bring in their own players.

The local lad came through Villa's academy and played almost 400 games for the club before he was released in the summer.

Whilst he became a fans favourite, with plenty of goals against Birmingham helping that, the final few years were tough for the striker.

Many questioned his attitude and desire to get on the pitch, whilst injuries restricted his time on the pitch.

Therefore, there was a real mixed reaction to news of his gesture on twitter...
