Manchester United welcome League One side Charlton Athletic to Old Trafford on Tuesday evening as they both battle it out for a place in the last four of the EFL Cup.

United come into this game in flying form, as the Red Devils are currently on a five-game winning streak that stretches back to before the 2022 World Cup, and their last eight games at Old Trafford have ended in wins.

Since playing Manchester City in October, United have played 17 games, winning 14, and losing one, which was away to Aston Villa in November.

Erik ten Hag’s side come into this encounter on the back of making it through to the fourth round of the FA Cup by beating Everton 3-1 on Friday night. The five-time winners of the competition have suffered back-to-back semi-final exits to Manchester City in 2020 and 2021, while their last two quarter-final eliminations have come against sides in lower divisions, but many will be expecting a routine win here.

The visitors head into this game on the back of beating Lincoln City 2-1 on Saturday, a win that has seen them climb up the League One table. The Addicks have already managed to knock out Premier League opposition as they beat Brighton & Hove Albion on penalties in the last round.

As Tuesday’s game gets ever closer, here at FLW, we have taken a look at the possible starting XI Manchester United will go with….

Man United will know this is a great opportunity for them to advance to the last four of the EFL Cup, and while Ten Hag will take this tie very seriously, he may look to rotate some players as they face Man City at the weekend.

One player who will definitely be missing is creative force Bruno Fernandes, as the Portuguese star is suspended for this game as he has already picked up two bookings in the competition. This may give the United boss a headache, as Donny van de Beek is also a doubt as he awaits news on the injury he sustained against Bournemouth last week.

Therefore, Ten Hag may turn to Fred, as the midfielder has featured regularly off the bench in recent weeks and even got on the scoresheet in the win over Nottingham Forest a couple of weeks ago. The Brazilian could be joined in midfield by his regular partner, Scott McTominay, who could be given a rare start as Ten Hag looks to rest Casemiro for the Manchester derby.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who was rested in the game against Everton on Friday, could also make the starting lineup for the cup tie. While Ten Hag may look to bring out Raphael Varane and Luke Shaw for this game and give valuable minutes to Lisandro Martinez and club captain Harry Maguire.

Argentine youngster Alejandro Garnacho could be given a start from the off as United rest Anthony Martial and play Marcus Rashford up front, as he looks to continue his impressive goal-scoring form.

While new signing Jack Butland could be in line to make his debut for the club, as he is eligible to make his debut here, having not played for parent club Crystal Palace in the competition this term.
