When you look at Ipswich Town's current squad, you can certainly see the benefits that they enjoy from their academy.

A number of Tractor Boys' current players, including several members of their current squad, have come through the ranks of their own academy, and are now playing a big role as the club aim to move forward back towards the Championship.

However, it is also worth remembering that it is not just the club's current squad to have benefitted from those coming through Ipswich's youth ranks, with plenty of players having also gone on to enjoy impressive careers after graduating from the club's academy in the past.

Indeed, as well as working as an advantage to Ipswich themselves, a number of those players have also gone on to make significant impacts for other clubs after moving on from Portman Road.

Here, we've taken a look at ten of the best players to have ever come out of Ipswich's academy.

We start this with a player who actually only ever made one appearance for Ipswich, in the form of midfielder Matt Bloomfield.

Having joined the club at youth level as a teenager, Bloomfield's sole Ipswich appearance came in the League Cup in 2003, and he was released by the club in December of that year, when he went on to join Wycombe Wanderers, a club he has been at ever since.

During what is now more than 17 years at Wycombe, Bloomfield has played a key role in the club's rise through the Football League to reach the Championship for the first time in their history this season, making over 550 appearances in all competitions for the Chairboys in the process, a feat of longevity that simply has to be admired.

Having joined Ipswich as a 15-year-old, Marriott is another who never quite manager to make the grade at Portman Road, but has gone on to enjoy a respectable career in the Football League even so.

The striker made just three appearances at senior level for Ipswich before leaving the club on a permanent basis - after a handful of loan spells elsewhere - joining Luton Town in League Two, with his goals earning him a move to Peterborough, where one prolific League One season saw him step up to the Championship with Derby.

Marriott went on to become a regular feature for the Rams for a time, although injury has hampered opportunities on loan at Sheffield Wednesday this season for the 26-year-old, who is closing in on 100 career goals.

Next up is one of those who is looking to make an impact on Ipswich Town's promotion push in the current campaign, in the shape of midfielder Andre Dozzell.

Having joined Ipswich's academy ranks at the age of eight back in 2008, Dozzell has already started to make an impact at senior level for the Tractor Boys, even at what is still a relatively early stage of his career.

The 21-year-old has already made 79 appearances in all competitions for the club, making himself a key figure for Ipswich in the heart of midfield, and it is no surprise to see that Championship sides such as Blackburn and QPR have been linked with him recently.

One player whose impact on Ipswich Town after coming through the clubs youth ranks is already at an unquestionable stage, is Tommy Smith.

The centre back joined the club in 2006, and would make his debut for the Tractor Boys in August 2008, while still only 18-years-old, featuring in a 2-1 defeat at home to Preston.

That appearance would prove to be the first 267 appearances in all competitions for Ipswich made by Smith, who would spend a total of almost 11 years at first-team level with the club, leaving in January 2018 to join MLS side Colarado Rapids, having been crowned both the club's Young Player of the Year (2006/07) and Player of the Year (2012/13) during his time at Portman Road.

Next up on this list is another vital member of the Ipswich squad currently available to manager Paul Cook, in the shape of Luke Woolfenden.

The defender first joined Ipswich at the age of 11, and having risen through the ranks, has now emerged as a key player for the club since making his debut for the Tractor Boys as an 18-year-old in 2017.

Recent seasons have seen Woolfenden go on to make more than 50 appearances during his time with Ipswich, although his progress during the current campaign has hampered the progress the 22-year-old, whose performances have previously seen him linked with Premier League Sheffield United.

A member of Ipswich's academy all the way through from Under 7s level, Clarke is a player that some of those around the club must surely have a sense of 'what might have been' when they see what he is dong now.

The centre back made just a handful of senior appearances for the Tractor Boys before making a loan move to Portsmouth permanent in the summer of 2016, at the age of 19, with Clarke going on to impress considerably during his time at Fratton Park.

That was enough to earn him a move to the Premier League with Brighton, and though he has yet to make his debut for the Seagulls, Clarke has excelled during the past two seasons on loan in the Championship with Derby County.

Another defender with connections with Derby to have enjoyed an impressive career after coming through the youth system at Ipswich, is Richard Keogh.

The centre back on the books of Ipswich before joining Stoke's youth ranks at the age of 16, going on to appear for the likes of Bristol City and Coventry at senior level before moving to Derby in 2012.

The Republic of Ireland international made over 300 appearances for the Rams, and although his time at Pride Park ended in controversy, his ability on the pitch at Championship level cannot be questioned, and nor can his longevity, given he is still playing in the second-tier for Huddersfield Town this season.

It seems Ipswich have form when it comes to finding and developing young centre backs, with the next player on this list another to naturally play in that position, in the form of Ryan Bennett.

The joined Ipswich in 1996, and left the club for Grimsby's academy ten years later in 2006, where after three years in their senior side, Bennett would climb up the Football League, winning League One promotion with Peterborough, and Championship promotion with Norwich and Wolves, playing a more considerable role in the latter's charge to the second-tier title in 2017/18.

After several two years playing in the Premier League, Bennett is now back in the Championship with Swansea this season, helping the Welsh club mount a strong push for promotion back to the top-flight of English football.

Another player on this list to play in the Premier League after coming through the youth ranks at Ipswich, even doing so with the Tractor Boys themselves, is Darren Ambrose.

Indeed, the midfielder's senior debut came for Ipswich as an 18-year-old in April 2002, coming off the bench in a 2-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Premier League, with Ambrose staying at the club for another year despite the Tractor Boys' relegation.

Ambrose would leave for Newcastle in 2003, playing for the Magpies and later Charlton in English football's top-flight, also playing for the likes of Crystal Palace, and twice returning to Ipswich, later in a career that while respectable, could have delivered even more were it not for injury.

Rhodes joined Ipswich as a teenager in 2005, and given what happened further down the line in his career, may be another case of "what might have been" from a Tractor Boys perspective.

The striker would score once in ten appearances for Ipswich before leaving the club while still only 19-years-old in the summer of 2009, making the move to Huddersfield.

From there, Rhodes' prolific form first for the Terriers to eventually help them win promotion to the Championship, and then for Blackburn, saw him score more than 20 goals in six consecutive seasons, earning him a place in the EFL's Team of the Decade, and top spot on this list.
