Coventry City have had some top players come through over the years and they'll be aiming to produce plenty more in the seasons to come as they bid to stabilise in the Championship and then kick on from there.

Decent news came in the shape of confirmation of their return to the Ricoh Arena earlier this week, too, and so fans will hope the club can start to build something in the years to come.

It's always exciting to see young players come through at your club and that helps with the building process. A player can either spring onto the scene and help get results or, indeed, be sold to help raise funds - something the club has needed in the recent past. But what ten are perhaps the best in recent years to have come from the Sky Blues?

With the help of transfermarkt, we take a look at ten from the recent past...

Gaël Bigirimana came through at Coventry and early impressive performances saw him sign for Newcastle United soon after his Sky Blues emergence.

During his time on Tyneside he found minutes hard to come by, however, and he ended up back on loan at Coventry before re-signing.

He also had a loan spell at Rangers during his time on the books at Newcastle, as the Gers looked to climb back up the pyramid up in Scotland, but he never featured in the league for them.

He left again in 2017 and has since played for the likes of Motherwell and Hibernian with him now playing at Glentoran.

Roy O'Donovan has certainly had a varied career during his time playing.

It all started at Coventry City but the Irish-Australian has been pretty much everywhere since leaving the Sky Blues.

His list of clubs includes Cork City, Sunderland, Dundee United, Blackpool, Southend United, Hartlepool United, Coventry City, Hibernian, Northampton Town, DPMM FC, Mitra Kukar FC, Central Coast Mariners and Brisbane Roar.

He now plays for Newcastle Jets in Australia having joined in 2020 and has scored six goals in 17 league games for them after getting six in twelve for Brisbane previously.

Ben Turner is currently turning out for Notts County in the National League as they bid to get out of the fifth tier of English football and back into the EFL.

He's an experienced defender having played for the likes of Cardiff, Burton and Mansfield Town at various levels in the English game and it all started for him with the Sky Blues.

He's 33 in August so still has a few years left in him at centre-half and he'll hope the new season will be one with Notts back in League Two.

John Eustace came through at Coventry and made over 80 league appearances for the club during his time there.

He moved to Stoke in 2003 whilst he later played for Watford and Derby County.

It was at the Hornets where he really made his name, though, with well over 150 league appearances for the club as he became a regular in their midfield at the peak of his career.

He's now an assistant to Mark Warburton at Queens Park Rangers with the Hoops enjoying a good run in 2021 at the moment and moving up the table.

Gary McSheffrey was born in Coventry and racked up well over 100 league appearances for the Sky Blues as he emerged on the first-team scene.

He also played for the likes of Stockport County, Luton Town, Birmingham City, Nottingham Forest and Leeds United in his career after leaving the Sky Blues before returning for a second period.

He has dropped into non-league football in his later career and is currently on the books at r Rossington Main whilst he has taken a step into coaching with the Doncaster u18s.

Tom Bayliss is only 21 but Preston North End saw his potential and took him away from Coventry City back in 2019.

He was a regular for the Sky Blues but is having to bide his time a little more at Deepdale at the moment, and he'll be aiming to change that.

Coventry obviously saw him as their next big star coming through but had to sell and the idea would have been for him to perhaps follow James Maddison's path to the Premier League.

However, he'll be looking to force his way into the Preston side at this current moment in time.

Cyrus Christie has played for several clubs in the EFL during his career and has been well-known for flying up and down from his full-back position.

He's currently on loan at Nottingham Forest from Fulham and it remains to be seen if he is going to remain there past the end of the season with the Lilywhites looking strong defensively at the moment without him involved.

He's also played for Middlesbrough and Derby in the Championship but it all started for him at Coventry City where he came through.

Chris Kirkland was a top goalkeeper in his prime and earned a move to Liverpool at the peak of his powers as well as challenging to push into the England squad.

Injuries played their part in perhaps limiting him from everything he wanted to achieve at the top level of the game but he was certainly a fine goalkeeper at the peak of his powers, there's no denying that.

Spells at West Brom and Wigan Athletic followed his time at Liverpool as well as a period at Sheffield Wednesday.

Callum Wilson is second on the list.

The striker is currently at Newcastle United and though he's had a couple of injuries this season he has again shown his Premier League level class in front of goal.

He really made his name at Bournemouth in the Premier League with him regularly linked with moves to other sides in the top flight and, with the Cherries relegated last season, one of those links eventually came to fruition.

A top level forward and one that'll be eager to fire Newcastle to safety.

James Maddison was always going to be number 1 here.

The attacking midfielder first showed his real quality in a Sky Blues shirt and he has gone onto great things since.

He moved to Norwich City and then Leicester City where he has established himself as a top Premier League level footballer.

He's also in England reckoning now and will be eager to earn a call-up for the European Championships when they come around this summer.
