Watford will obviously be hoping for a strong end to the Championship season, as they look to secure promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

The Hornets are currently sitting in a strong position to claim an automatic promotion spot come the end of the campaign, which would ensure that their exile from the top-flight of English football is as brief as possible.

Whilst we wait and see how they do, we’ve been having a think back over the years to some of the best players to have featured at Vicarage Road that do not hail from these shores.

To do that, we've put together a list of the top ten best foreign players to have played for Watford over the years, although the likes of Lloyd Doyley, who played for Jamaica but was born in England, have not been considered here.

Here, then, are the ten we’ve gone for – take a look and see who might make your list…

We start this list with Heurelho Gomes, who initially only signed a one-year deal with Watford when he joined the club following his release from Tottenham at the end of the 2013/14 season.

However, the Brazilian goalkeeper would go on to stay at Vicarage Road for the next six years, during which he helped Watford win promotion to the Premier League  and then re-establish themselves in the top-flight, as well as playing an important role in their run to the 2019 FA Cup final.

In total, Gomes made well over 150 appearances in all competitions for The Hornets, before leaving the club at the end of last season, bringing an end to an impressive playing career.

Next up is a player who is still at Vicarage Road helping Watford battle for promotion to the Premier League this season, in the form of Christian Kabasele.

The defender joined Watford from Genk in his native Belgium for a fee reported to be worth £5.8million, with Kabasele subsequently going on to help the club compete in the Premier League for several more years.

Injuries have somewhat blighted Kabasele's time with Watford so far - which may not have done the club any favours with regards to their relegation last season - but the centre back, who has twice been capped by Belgium since joining the Hornets, has still managed to make over 100 appearances in all competitions for the club.

He may not have been at Watford for long, but Michel Ngonge certainly had an important impact on the club during his time at Vicarage Road.

Joining the Hornets in the summer 0f 1998, Ngonge became a key figure for Watford during his debut campaign with the club, with the Belgium born DR Congo international scoring six goals in that season, including the winning goal in the first leg of the play-off semi final against Birmingham, as the club secured promotion to the Premier League for the first time in their history.

Although Ngonge couldn't quite make the same impact the following year in the top-flight, and would leave at the end of that season, his significant contribution to that promotion-winning season earns him a place on this list.

Joining Watford on loan from Udinese in the summer of 2014, the Hornets would make Ighalo's loan move permanent just a few months later.

The Nigerian striker then scored 20 league goals to fire Watford to promotion from the Championship during his first season with the club, and netted another 15 goals in the Premier League the following season in 2015/16.

Ighalo's efforts in the 2016/17 campaign were less successful, and he would leave for China midway through that campaign, although his contribution to Watford in getting them promoted and keeping them in the top-flight in his first two years at Vicarage Road, earn him a place on this list.

A year after the aforementioned Gomes had made the move from Tottenham to Watford, Capoue would do the same, joining the Hornets for a reported £6.3million following the club's promotion from the Championship.

Following that move, Capoue would quickly make himself a key figure in the centre of the park for Watford, with his imposing performances in midfield helping to make the club a forced to be reckoned with for a period in the top-flight.

The French midfielder was voted the club's Player of the Year for the 2018/19 season, and made just over 180 appearances for the club in total, before leaving for La Liga side Villarreal in January this year.

Helguson joined Watford midway through the 1999/2000 season for a then club record fee, but despite scoring an impressive six goals in 16 league appearances, he was unable to prevent the club suffering relegation from the Premier League.

Even so, the Icelandic striker stayed at Vicarage Road for several more years in the second-tier of English football, operating as a useful goalscorer for the club, although his 20 goals in the 2004/05 season earned him both the club's Player of the Season award, and a move to then Premier League Fulham.

Helguson eventually returned to Watford on loan from Bolton during the 2010/11 season, where he scored a further 11 goals in 29 league games for the Hornets, taking his tally of appearances for the club past the 200 mark, with a more than respectable return of 76 goals in that time.

DeMerit joined Watford in the summer of 2004, and over the next six years, would go on to become a regular feature for the Hornets.

In total the American midfielder would make 211 appearances for the club, becoming a key figure in the centre of the park during his time at Vicarage Road, and earning himself a fond place in the memories of many a Watford fan in the process.

That is perhaps not surprising given that his finest hour for the club came in the 2006 Championship play-off final, when he scored and produced a Man of the Match performance in the 3-0 win over Leeds United that finally secured Watford's return to the Premier League, which certainly helps him claim a place on this list.

It could certainly be argued that Matej Vydra's Watford career can best be described as something of an enigma.

The striker won the Championship player of the year award in 2013 after scoring 20 league goals on loan for the Hornets during the 2012/13 campaign, and after a less successful spell in the Premier League with West Brom in 2013/14, returned to Vicarage Road in 2014/15, again on loan, and netted 16 more times in the league to help the Hornets claim Championship promotion.

Vydra was perhaps not surprisingly signed permanently by Watford in the summer of 2015, but was then almost immediately loaned out for the 2015/16 season to Reading, and made just three appearances as a permanent Watford player before being sold to Derby, although his goals during those two loan spells still earn the Czech a place on this list.

Perhaps one of the best bits of business Watford did last summer, was keeping hold of Ismaila Sarr despite their relegation from the Premier League.

A club record signing for the Hornets in the summer of 2019, Sarr enjoyed an excellent debut campaign at Vicarage Road, earning plenty of admirers, not least for his dismantling of Liverpool to end the Premier League champions elect 44-game unbeaten run in the league.

Keeping the Senegalese winger has been pivotal for Watford in their push for promotion this season, with Sarr providing both goals and assists on a regular basis in the Championship, and he will surely be relishing the prospect of doing that in the top-flight again in the coming campaign.

Sarr wasn't the first player to join Watford from Rennes when he did so in 2019, with Abdoulaye Doucoure having done so three years earlier.

During his time at Vicarage Road, which started late after he spent the second half of the 2015/16 campaign on loan from Watford at Granada, the Frenchman became a huge figure for Watford in every sense of the word, with his dominant performances in the centre of the park proving a crucial asset for the Hornets, with Doucoure winning the club's player of the year award during the 2017-18 campaign.

Although Watford were unable to keep the midfielder following their relegation from the Premier League at the end of last season, they did still receive a very useful fee for Doucoure, with Everton reportedly paying around £20million for the services of the 28-year-old.
