It's not been the ideal start to their league campaign for Barnsley, with the Tykes currently sat bottom of the Championship table heading into international break.

There will have been high hopes from the majority of the Oakwell faithful, especially after they beat Fulham on the opening day of the season.

But Barnsley are yet to win a game since, which has resulted in Daniel Stendel being relieved of his duties, despite guiding them to promotion just a few months earlier.

Adam Murray has aided some slight improvement in performances since taking temporary charge of the Tykes, but they're yet to find their second league win this term.

There is still uncertainty around Oakwell as to who their next permanent manager will be, but it's important that the new boss gets the best out of an under-performing group of players at the earliest of opportunities.

We take a look at the top seven performers in the Barnsley team at the moment based off of statistics from Whoscored.

See how they rank below....

First on the list at number seven is summer signing Mads Anderson.

The youngster has made 13 appearances in total for the Tykes, with 12 of those being starts for his new club so far this season.

In a defensive line that has three centre-backs, he's been a rare bright-spark, and will be looking to build on some impressive showings so far this term.

Anderson has an average Whoscored rating of 6.54 and will be keen to showcase his talent as the season progresses.

Luke Thomas is the next player on the list as he takes sixth position in this ranking list.

The England Under-20 international seems to have adjusted well to life in the second tier, and he'll be hoping to nail down a regular place in the starting XI as the season progresses.

Thomas has made 13 appearances in total, but four of those have come from the substitutes bench, so there is work to do for the former Derby midfielder.

He has an average Whoscored rating of 6.64 so far in this year's league campaign.

Jacob Brown is in at number five, with the young winger adjusting to life well in the Championship it seems.

The 21-year-old does only have one goal to his name though, and will be hoping he can improve that tally as we head towards the festive period.

He has been a regular in Adam Murray's plans in recent weeks, and it'll be interesting to see whether he can retain his place if a new manager is appointed.

Brown has a Whoscored average rating of 6.71 so far this season.

Up next we have Dimitri Cavare. The full-back has been out injured in some games this season, but has done enough to make it into fourth position.

He offers Barnsley an extra body when attacking the opposition, but has also been a steady enough player to rely on for Adam Murray in recent weeks.

Cavare has one assist and has a Whoscored average rating of 6.72. He'll be hoping to remain fit for the remainder of the season as Barnsley fight against their relegation fears.

Taking third position is Aapo Halme, with the former Leeds defender settling into life at Oakwell perfectly it seems.

The young defender has been a regular in the starting XI, and has also popped up with two goals up the other end, so he's shown that he is a threat at both ends of the pitch.

Halme has a Whoscored average rating of 6.74 and has also picked up a man-of-the-match award this season despite Barnsley poor start to this year's campaign.

In at two we have Cauley Woodrow, and this surely makes sense for many of the Barnsley supporters.

Woodrow has six goals to his name in the 13 appearances he's made for the club this season, and looks as though he's going to be crucial to their survival chances this term.

It'll be interesting to see whether Barnsley can keep hold of Woodrow in January's transfer window, as his good run of form is unlikely to have gone unnoticed.

Mowatt has been Barnsley's best performer so far this season according to Whoscored, which might not come as a surprise to many of the Oakewell faithful.

The former Leeds midfielder has five assists and one goal to his name this term, and looks as though he'll be key to any of the positive performances that the Tykes put in

He also averages a Whoscored rating of 6.87 per game which has put him top of the pile heading into the international break.
