Brentford have had some top strikers in recent years and will be eager to ensure that remains the case in the years to come.

The Bees' story in the last decade or two has been a fine one to watch with them working their way up the EFL and now looking ready to become a Premier League club - they just need to seal that all-important promotion.

Along the way, their recruitment policy has become sharper and sharper and they've signed some excellent players, particularly recently, that have gone on to play in the Premier League already.

In the last two decades, though, who are the best strikers to have played for the club?

We count down ten here...

Gary Alexander kicks off our list.

Alexander played for a number of London clubs during his career and his technical ability on the ball as well as his eye for goal made him a favourite at a number of clubs.

He scored 21 goals in 62 games in the league for the Bees in a productive spell between 2010 and 2012 before moving to Crawley Town, on loan and then permanently.

He's played for the likes of Millwall and AFC Wimbledon in his career, too, and is currently the manager of non-league side Glebe.

Marcello Trotta will perhaps be remembered for what happened against Doncaster back in League One but, aside from that, he brought a lot of goals and better moments to Brentford when he was there.

He was on loan from Fulham for a handful of seasons and the Bees never took him on permanently but he still felt like part of the furniture for a couple of years at least.

He scored 19 league goals in 59 league games during his time at Griffin Park before moving back to Italy in 2015 with Avellino.

Charlie MacDonald made over 100 league appearances for Brentford between 2008 and 2011 and during that time he hit 40 goals.

The striker had played for the likes of Crawley Town, Gravesend and Northfleet (now Ebbsfleet United) and Southend United before moving to the Bees but it was perhaps at Griffin Park where he had the best period of his career.

Indeed, he still watches the Bees and comments on their matches on social media so has a keen eye on the club as they chase the Premier League promotion they crave.

Clayton Donaldson has spent much of his playing career up and down the EFL and that includes a spell at Brentford where he had some decent success.

He's now at Bradford City having joined in 2019 as he helps them in League Two but was with the Bees between 2011 and 2014 where he racked up the appearances.

He scored 46 league goals in 136 league matches so it's clear he was thought of very highly during his time at the club with him often causing defenders nightmares with his physical prowess.

Lasse Vibe is up next on our list.

Brentford may have an influx of Scandinavian and Danish influence at the moment but Vibe was at the club well before all that under Thomas Frank, joining back in 2015.

The striker scored 36 goals in 94 league games during his time in west London and certainly enjoyed his time back at Griffin Park, with fans also really taking to him.

He left the club in 2018 and headed to China but he is now back in Denmark with FC Midtjylland.

Andre Gray is back in the Championship with Watford, of course, but looks set to be returning to the Premier League with them come the end of the season.

He was at Brentford earlier on in his career after a fine spell at Luton and got 20 goals in 52 appearances, with Premier League interest sparked from that.

Burnley took him on where he did well and Watford have signed him since where he has perhaps had both ups and downs.

Even so, on his day he's been an electric forward in his career.

Scott Hogan's time at Brentford was arguably his most productive spell in his career so far.

He was so sharp under Dean Smith that that sparked massive interest in him and, of course, he moved to Aston Villa on the back of it.

Indeed, his time at Villa wasn't as successful and he now finds himself back in the Championship with Birmingham City, fighting to help them remain in the league.

He's shown signs of recovery at St Andrew's, though, and if he can find extra consistency he could start being a real threat once more.

Neal Maupay is third on our list.

The French forward really grew as a player at Griffin Park to the extent where he was knocking on the Premier League too loudly to be ignored.

Indeed, it was Brighton who took him on where he has done a decent job and the hustle and bustle as well as the quality he provides makes him a nuisance in the top flight.

He has Brentford to thank for helping him along, though,

Ivan Toney is second on our list with him having a blinder of a season for the Bees and looking set for the Premier League with or without them next year.

Another top signing from Brentford's recruitment team, the former Peterborough striker has stormed up English football after Newcastle United opted to let him go.

He's the top scorer in the Championship this season and has been an exceptional striker to watch this year.

Ollie Watkins just about edges out Ivan Toney but it's so tough to call!

We've gone with Watkins just because he's moved into the Premier League and gone on to really do well for Aston Villa as well, underlining his quality at that level.

Of course, Toney could head there next season and do even better but, for now, Watkins gets the nod and he certainly deserves plenty of praise.

He became a centre-forward at Brentford and came on leaps and bounds as he helped them challenge for promotion, firing them to the play-off final last season.
