Following an underwhelming end to the 2018/19 season, Northampton Town have made an encouraging start to the current campaign under manager Keith Curle.

After deciding to overhaul his squad in the summer transfer window, the 56-year-old has since guided the Cobblers into the play-off places in League Two.

Whilst some of Curle's additions have yet to hit top-form for Northampton, players such as Charlie Goode and Nicky Adams have made positive impacts since moving to the PTS Academy Stadium.

Here, using average ratings from WhoScored, we take a look at Northampton's seven best players this season...

After illustrating some real signs of promise for Northampton last season, David Cornell has taken his game to new heights during the opening months of the current campaign.

As well as being a fantastic shot-stopper, the 28-year-old is also capable of picking out a pass from time to time.

Having kept seven clean-sheets this season, Cornell will be looking to build upon this particular statistic over the coming weeks.

Brought in on a two-year deal in the summer by the Cobblers, Joe Martin has made a steady start to the season at full-back.

Having recently missed a handful of games due to injury, the defender will be hoping to return to Northampton's match-day squad for their clash with Grimsby Town at the weekend.

Despite initially being signed as a defender by Northampton last year, Jordan Turnbull has featured as a central midfielder on a number of occasions during the current campaign.

As well as being a fantastic reader of the game in a defensive sense, the former Coventry City man has also illustrated an eye for goal this season having found the back of the net on four occasions in League Two.

Since re-joining Northampton in the summer, Adams has been a mainstay in the club's starting eleven.

A fantastic player at League Two level, the winger has already provided his team-mates with five assists this season.

Providing that he can maintain his consistency over the coming months, Adams may end up playing a key role in helping the Cobblers achieve promotion to third-tier.

Brought in on a season-long loan deal from Blackburn Rovers in July, Scott Wharton has made an impressive start to life at the PTS Academy Stadium.

Dangerous from set-pieces, the defender scored a fantastic brace for Northampton in their 4-1 victory over Crewe Alexandra last Saturday.

Another player who is brought back to Northampton in the summer, Ryan Watson looked as if he would set League Two alight this season following his performances during the early stages of the season.

However, after providing three direct goal contributions in six league appearances, the midfielder suffered an injury setback which has forced him to watch on from the sidelines for the past two months.

Outstanding during his loan spell at Northampton last season, Goode opted to join the club on a permanent deal in July.

Since making the switch, the 24-year-old has been utterly fantastic in the heart of defence for the Cobblers alongside the likes of Wharton and Turnbull.

Unquestionably one of the best players in League Two, Goode will be determined to help his side seal a return to the third-tier in 2020.
