Sheffield Wednesday managed to keep themselves in with a slim chance of surviving the drop in the Championship this season with them securing a vital 1-0 win against Blackburn Rovers in mid-week.

The Owls managed to edge out the game and secure their first win in three matches after their 5-0 win against Cardiff City. That has seen Darren Moore’s side cut the gap to Derby County to four points and the two sides meet on the last day of the campaign. So, there is still that glimmer of hope left that they could somehow stay up.

However, this summer whatever happens there needs to be major changes around the club. The Owls have a lot of players in their squad out of contract and set to walk away for nothing. That could mean they are set to lose a lot of value on those players.

With that in mind, we have taken a look at Sheffield Wednesday’s squad and ranked the top 10 highest player valuation increases with the squad since those players arrived at Hillsborough. All valuations are according to Transfermarkt

At the moment four Sheffield Wednesday players within their squad have seen their market valuations increase by around £270,000 since their debuts for the club, according to Transfermarkt. The first of which is midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.

Dele-Bashiru has come through the Owls academy sides this season and managed to make his first-team breakthrough at Hillsborough. The 20-year-old was handed his debut for the club in a League Cup tie against Walsall and made his first league appearances off the bench in the 2-0 loss at Bristol City back in September. Since then, he has managed to make eight appearances in total in the league.

The midfielder could be set for a bright future at Hillsborough and he could make a major impact on their side next term if he is able to stay injury-free and goes on to impress Moore in their pre-season. There is plenty of time for his valuation to increase over the next few seasons.#

Another one of Sheffield Wednesday’s young prospects who have seen their valuation in the transfer market rise by around £270,000 since they made their debut for the club is defender Osaze Urhoghide.

Urhoghide has been one of the rare bright sparks for the Owls in what has largely been a miserable campaign at Hillsborough. The defender memorably made his debut last season in an FA Cup win at Brighton, after which he delivered an iconic post-match interview. This term, the 20-year-old has managed to break into the first-team and has become a regular starter in recent times.

The defender though is currently set to be out of contract with the club in the summer and it is believed that he is attracting the transfer intentions of the likes of Club Brugge and Sporting Lisbon. He is also interesting Crystal Palace, Leeds United and Watford. Talks remain ongoing with him and the club over a potential new deal. However, they could be set to lose him for free at this rate.

Another one of Sheffield Wednesday’s players that have also seen their transfer market valuation increase by around £270,000 since they made their debut for the Owls, according to Transfermarkt, is goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith.

Wildsmith has at times split opinions amongst Sheffield Wednesday supporters and he has been handed runs in the starting line-up under a couple of different managers since he made his debut for the club in a 4-1 win against Mansfield Town in a League Cup tie in August 2015. The keeper’s best season to date came in 2017/18 when he kept seven clean sheets in 26 league appearances.

The following year, Wildsmith was back out of favour, but he did manage to make nine league appearances last term. So far this term, the keeper has featured 19 times in the Championship and kept five clean sheets. He has though once again lost his place to Keiren Westwood.

Although with Westwood out of contract at the end of the campaign, he may get more chances next season.

The final play in the Owls’ current squad who has also seen his valuation in the transfer market increase by around £270,000 since his debut for the club, according to Transfermarkt, is goalkeeper Cameron Dawson.

Dawson, like Wildsmith, has had chances to impress at Hillsborough under different managers but never been able to fully convince. The keeper made his debut off the bench in a 2-1 loss against Brighton back in October 2016. Since then, the 25-year-old has been sent out on loan a couple of times and also managed to break into the first-team more regularly.

The keeper’s best season to date at Sheffield Wednesday was in 2018/19, where he managed to keep three clean sheets in 26 league appearances. Last term, Dawson kept seven clean sheets in his 24 matches in the Championship. However, the 25-year-old has partly down to injuries and partly down to the form of Westwood been limited to just eight appearances this term.

In sixth place on this list is midfielder Liam Shaw, whose valuation in the transfer market has increased by around £315,000 since he made his debut for the Owls, according to Transfermarkt.

Shaw is a controversial figure around Hillsborough now, with the talented midfielder having already agreed a pre-contract agreement with Celtic to leave the club in the summer. That means That Sheffield Wednesday are set to lose him for less than his market valuation and will likely only be set to receive a modest sort of fee for him at a tribunal due to his age.

The midfielder made his debut at Sheffield Wednesday against Queens Park Rangers back in July 2020. This term, Shaw has established himself as an important player in the first-team squad and has managed to make 19 appearances in the Championship to date scoring one goal against Middlesbrough. Some fans though feel he should not be in and around the side knowing he is already leaving.

Making it into the list in 5th place is another young Sheffield Wednesday prospect that has seen their transfer valuation rise since they made their debut. According to Transfermarkt, Matt Penney’s valuation has increased by around £360,000.

Penney made his debut for the Owls in a League Cup tie against Sunderland back in August 2018. The 23-year-old then went on to make 16 appearances in the Championship during the 2018/19 campaign. The following year, he was sent out on loan to German side St. Pauli where he played again under Jos Luhukay. This term, he has not been a regular making just 12 league appearances.

The 23-year-old is set to see his existing deal at Hillsborough expire in the summer, which means that Sheffield Wednesday are at the moment going to lose him potentially on a free transfer.

The first more senior figure to appear on this list is the versatile Sam Hutchinson, whose transfer valuation has, according to Transfermarkt, increased by around £405,000 since he made his debut for the club during his first spell at Hillsborough.

Hutchinson was initially signed by the Owls on loan from Chelsea in February 2014 and made his debut that same month. His loan move turned into a permanent one the following summer and he swiftly became an integral member of the side when he was fit. He made 25 and 33 league appearances respectively as the club reached the play-offs in both 2015/16 and 2016/17.

The 31-year-old would only make eight league appearances in the 2017/18 season and the following year made 24 appearances in the Championship. Last term proved to be the final year of his first spell with the club and he was allowed to leave after making 23 appearances in the league.

However, in the recent winter window, he was re-signed by the Owls on a deal until the end of the campaign after he had left Cypriot side FC Pafos after just a few months. He is again out of contract in the summer though and facing an uncertain future.

In third place on this list is defender Tom Lees, who according to Transfermarkt has seen his valuation in the transfer market increase by around £450,000 since he made his debut for the club.

Lees was signed by Sheffield Wednesday in the summer of 2014 and he has gone on to become a crucial member of the Owls’ back four over the last seven seasons. The centre-back played a pivotal role in the back-to-back top-six finishes the club managed under Carlos Carvalhal and made 34 and 35 league appearances in those two campaigns.

The defender has never played less than 27 times in the league in a single season since he arrived at Hillsborough. However, Lees’ current deal is set to expire in the summer meaning the Owls are at risk of losing one of their most influential performers for nothing. It might though be the right time for him to move on after spending so long with the club.

In at joint first place on this list is another player who has been an excellent servant for the Owls during his lengthy time playing for Sheffield Wednesday. Liam Palmer has seen his valuation in the transfer market increase by around £675,000 since his debut.

Palmer came through the Owls’ youth team and has been one of the best players they have produced through in their academy in recent times. The defender made his debut in a League Cup tie against Bury in August 2010. Since really the 2013/14 campaign he has been an integral member of the squad at Hillsborough making nearly 300 appearances.

The right-back helped the Owls make the play-offs in both the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons and he has remained an important member of the side over the last few years despite their form declining. Moore will hope to draw on his experience and quality as he looks to rebuild things this summer.

The other player in Sheffield Wednesday’s current squad who has also seen his valuation in the transfer market rise by £675,000, according to Transfermarkt, is Kadeem Harris.

Harris was signed by Sheffield Wednesday in the summer of 2019 after his exit from Cardiff City and he went on to make his debut for the Owls against Reading on the opening day of last term netting one of the goals in a 3-1 win. He went on to make 43 league appearances and also chipped in with three goals and four assists.

So far this term, Harris has not been able to have as much of an influence in the final third, but he has still managed to register four assists in his 35 Championship appearances. He is set to be out of contract in the summer and has been linked with a move to the likes of Reading and Watford. It looks like he will be set to leave them in the summer.
