Rangers working to secure transfer agreement for in-demand player

Scottish Premiership side Rangers are set to step up their pursuit of Oldham Athletic defender George Edmundson, according to reports from Football Insider.

The 21-year old has endured a hugely impressive season at the Lancashire club this season, and was subsequently named in the Sky Bet League Two Team of the Season after a string of solid displays for the Latics.

The central defender made 54 appearances in all competitions for Oldham in the 2018/19 campaign, and has since attracted interest from a host of high-profile clubs.

It is believed that, as well as Rangers, Stoke City and Hull City are after the Latics academy graduate, who has established himself as one of the most promising youngsters in the EFL.

But now, reports claim that Edmundson has spent time at Rangers’ training ground headquarters at Auchenhowie, as the Glasgow club look to seal a deal.

Steven Gerrard’s side are looking to spend just less than £1million for the highly-rated defender, with his deal at Boundary Park set to expire next summer.

The Verdict

This is a transfer story that has split me right down the middle, as I’m not sure Rangers is the best move for him.

On one hand, Rangers are a massive club, and are likely to challenge for trophies every year as they look to compete with Celtic for the SPFL title.

On the other hand though, a lot is said about the competition in Scotland, and a move to a high-profile EFL side is probably the best for the defender’s career and development as a player.
