Scottish giants Rangers remain keen on signing Preston North End midfielder Daniel Johnson according to Football Insider.

The Gers' interest in signing the 28-year-old has been no secret, and the club are reportedly keen to push ahead with a pre-contract deal in the near future.

It has previously been revealed by Football Insider that Johnson has turned down a new contract offer from Preston North End, with the midfielder entering the final six months of his current deal at Deepdale.

The midfielder has caught the eye with some impressive performances this season for Alex Neil's side, who are currently sat 12th in the Championship table.

Johnson has been a regular for them as well, and has scored four goals and chipped in with three assists in his 18 appearances in all competitions this term.

This recent report from Football Insider claims that Rangers are keen on sign him on a pre-contract deal this month, which would result in him signing for the club in the summer on a free transfer, instead of paying a hefty fee to land his signature in January.

Johnson and his Preston North End team-mates are set to return to action at the weekend, when they take on play-off chasing rivals Bristol City, in what is certain to be a closely-fought battle at Ashton Gate.

The Verdict:

I'm not surprised by this at all.

Rangers would have been delighted to hear that Johnson was one of the players to turn down a new contract with Preston North End recently, as it'll be a major boost to their chances of landing his signature.

The midfielder has really impressed me over the years, and I think he's a player that would certainly add something to their squad next season.

I expect Steven Gerrard's side to get an agreement in place for Johnson during the January transfer window, as the prospect of playing European football will surely be too big of an opportunity to turn down.
