Rangers’ transfer stance on key Sunderland figure becomes clearer

on

Rangers are set to line up a move for Sunderland striker Ross Stewart this summer if Alfredo Morelos opts against accepting a new deal at Ibrox, according to a report from The Northern Echo.

Morelos’ current contract is set to run until 2023 and talks over fresh terms have stalled since the conclusion of the 2021/22 campaign.

Providing that Morelos doesn’t sign a new contract, it is understood that Rangers will sell him and then prioritise a move for Stewart.

Stewart produced a host of fantastic displays for Sunderland last season as he helped his side seal promotion to the Championship by becoming a key player for the club.

In the 49 appearances that he made in the third-tier, the forward managed to find the back of the net on 26 occasions whilst he also chipped in with five assists.

As is the case with Morelos at Rangers, Stewart’s deal at Sunderland also expires in 2023.

Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman recently revealed that the club are willing to discuss a new contract with the Scotland international.

Rangers will be able to provide Stewart with the opportunity to play in the Europa League next season as they finished second in the Scottish Premiership earlier this year.

The Black Cats meanwhile will be hoping that the 25-year-old will be leading the line for them in the Championship when the new term gets underway in July.

1. Portman Road (Ipswich)

The Verdict

Sunderland will be keen to see Morelos sign a new deal at Rangers as they may find it difficult to fend off interest from the Scottish side for Stewart.

If Morelos moves on to pastures new, it wouldn’t be at all surprising if the Gers step up their pursuit of Stewart by submitting a significant offer for him.

Having excelled in League One last season, Stewart will unquestionably be confident in his ability to deliver the goods at a higher level in the upcoming campaign.

Although Sunderland will be determined to keep Stewart, they may find it beneficial to cover the possibility of him leaving by drafting up a list of possible replacements.
