Rangers are set to deal Leeds United and Sheffield United a huge blow this month, with Jermain Defoe close to agreeing an 18-month loan spell with the Ibrox club.

Steven Gerrard has done a terrific job in helping Gers back into title contention in Scotland, with the former Liverpool midfielder making great strides in his first job in management.

According to Sky Sports, his side are expected to finalise an 18-month loan deal for Defoe, who has found himself outcast at AFC Bournemouth this year in the Premier League.

That deal will include two separate recall options, one in the summer of 2019 and one in January 2020.

Defoe is now 36, and has found his opportunities limited back on the South Coast.

In 18 months, he’s made just 11 starts and returned four Premier League goals, falling down Eddie Howe’s pecking order.

According to the Mirror, Leeds and Sheffield United were both reportedly interested in offering the former England man a route to the Championship, but it appears his destination is the SPL and a title charge, as Rangers look to end Celtic’s dominance north of the border.

The Verdict

To Leeds and Sheffield United, this is an obvious blow, as Defoe would’ve been a superb addition in the Championship.

He’s scored goals everywhere he’s gone and, despite his age, he will make a difference for Rangers, who are getting a superb deal.

Gerrard will have been a huge factor in this decision.
