Scottish Premiership side Rangers are interested in signing Wigan Athletic star Nick Powell, according to reliable journalist Alan Nixon.

The 25-year old has been a standout performer for the Latics over the last few years, scoring 15 goals in 45 games and playing an influential role in their promotion from League One last season.

And the playmaker has been another crucially important player for Paul Cook's men this season, scoring six goals and producing six assists and helping the Lancashire club climb away from the relegation zone.

But it seems as if the Latics may be resigned to losing their star-man in the summer, with his contract set to expire at the DW Stadium. Promotion-chasing Leeds United have already been credited with an interest in the exciting midfielder.

Steven Gerrard's Gers had previously been linked with Powell's signature, and according to Nixon, the Glasgow side are still "very" interested in signing him ahead of the summer window.

Wigan currently sit 20th in the Sky Bet Championship table, four points clear of the relegation zone, with 21st placed Millwall having a game in hand.

The Verdict

I think Powell would be an excellent signing for Rangers, but would it be a good move for him?

The standard of football and competition in Scotland isn't the best by any means, and it would be quite surprising to see him move to Rangers.

If I were Powell, I'd much rather move to Leeds - they are in need of another attacking midfielder and they could well be playing in the Premier League next season.
