Glasgow Rangers transfer target Jonson Clarke-Harris has spoken out on his future with Peterborough United, with the striker telling EFL on Quest that he intends to respect his contract with the newly promoted Sky Bet League One side.
The former Rotherham United frontman has been far and away one of the Football League’s best goal scorers this term and has hit an astonishing 33 goals across all competitions as the Posh achieved their long term goal of securing a return to the Sky Bet Championship.
Unsurprisingly his influential performances up top for his current club have not gone unnoticed elsewhere, with Barry Fry revealing in the past that the Ibrox club’s scouts had been to watch his player in weeks gone by as they eye up a summer move for the player.
Speaking recently about his future, Clarke-Harris appeared to suggest that he wanted to give the Championship a fair crack as opposed to moving on:
“I’ve got a contract with Peterborough for the next three years and I respect my contract, I respect the club and any decision that the owner makes – he makes.
“But I’m happy and I respect my contract at Peterborough.
Peterborough United quiz: Does London Road have a higher or lower capacity than these 18 grounds?
“The aim was never to come here and be sold for millions, otherwise I wouldn’t have signed such a lengthy contract with the club, it was always to get promoted.
“Now I’m back in the Championship I feel like I deserve my fair crack at the Championship.”
As mentioned by the powerful frontman, he does has a contract with the club until the summer of 2024 and would likely command a significant fee in the next transfer window if Peterborough did indeed openly listen to offers for their star man.
It is interesting to see Clarke-Harris come out and make these comments as it shows that he is content with staying put this summer despite interest from bigger clubs such as the Gers.
He has been in the form of his career for the Posh and quite rightly deserves the opportunity to choose his own destiny.
I can see the club selling either Clarke-Harris or Siriki Dembele in the upcoming window, but I do think it is unlikely that they will let both leave.
All in all, the club holds all the cards in this situation and they are sure to receive a significant windfall if he is sold this summer.
