Rangers remain the favourites to sign Oldham Athletic defender George Edmundson, even though Portsmouth and Peterborough United have had bids accepted for him, according to Football Insider.

Football Insider claim that the 21-year-old has told his representatives that he would prefer to move to Rangers, rather than one of the English clubs interested in him.

It was reported last week that Peterborough have had a bid of £600,000 plus add-ons accepted by Oldham, while their League One rivals Portsmouth have matched that offer and have been given permission to speak to the player, although it now seems that he would prefer to join Rangers.

Rangers have made various bids to sign the centre-back, who has handed in a transfer request in an attempt to force a move away from Boundary Park.

This latest report states that Rangers set to increase their previous highest offer of £500,000 plus add-ons this week, in an attempt to reach an agreement with Oldham.

Edmundson made 54 appearances for Oldham in all competitions last season and has established a reputation of being one of the best young defenders in the EFL.

The Verdict

It will be a blow for Oldham to lose such a talented player, but he's handed in a transfer request and clearly doesn't see his future at Boundary Park.

It makes little sense for Oldham to keep the player at the club if he is unhappy and I wouldn't be surprised to see him move to Rangers this summer.

Oldham will probably want to hold out for as much money as possible for Edmundson, so maybe that's why they have rejected all offers from Rangers so far.

Rangers are a huge club, with a great history and a massive fan base, so you can understand why Edmundson would favour a move to Ibrox over Portsmouth or Peterborough.
