Rangers are interested in making a fresh move to sign Norwich City midfielder Kenny McLean in January, with Steven Gerrard keen to add the 28-year-old to his squad according to The Scottish Sun.

Norwich fielded interest in McLean from Rangers over the summer, but Daniel Farke refused to allow the Scotland international to leave the club describing the midfielder’s qualities as ‘irreplaceable’ for his side, per The Scottish Sun.

That came after the Scotland international had been an important member of their side which were relegated from the Premier League last term.

McLean, though, has only managed to start four of Norwich’s opening 11 Championship matches and has made just eight league appearances in total. That could mean that the midfielder is potentially open to making a move away from the club ahead of the summer’s European Championships, per The Sun.

It is thought that Rangers are keen to bring in McLean from Norwich in January as they attempt to end Celtic’s domestic dominance.

Gerrard’s side are interested in making a potential offer to pay in instalments for the midfielder, as well as offering a loan deal with an agreement to buy in the summer, per The Sun.

The Verdict

Losing McLean at this stage of the season would undoubtedly be a major blow for Norwich, who will be hoping that they can keep hold of a number of their key players as they target promotion back to the Premier League. The 28-year-old played a key role in the second half of the 2018/19 season as the Canaries earned promotion.

However, so far this campaign he has yet to really establish himself in Farke’s starting line-up and that could mean that the midfielder thinks a move away might be the best move for him. Considering he will want to be in Scotland’s starting line-up at the Euros in the summer he will need to playing regularly.

Farke was keen to point out that Norwich should not sell McLean in the summer, but the Canaries might have to consider whether the 28-year-old is going to be a major part of their long-term plans on and off-the-field now and assess if they should allow him to make the move to Rangers in the January transfer window.
