Rangers are to make an official bid for Preston North End midfielder Daniel Johnson, according to Football Insider.

Johnson has been heavily linked with a move to Ibrox in the past week, with the 27-year-old attracting interest from Steven Gerrard's side.

Last week, the Mirror's David Anderson claimed that Rangers made an offer of £2million for Johnson, however that was quickly played down by the Lancashire Evening Post.

Johnson's future at Deepdale does look uncertain, though, especially after being left out of the squad which lost 1-o to Swansea City on the opening day of the Championship season at the weekend.

Furthermore, speaking about Johnson's future after the game, Alex Neil gave a blunt answer of "no", when quizzed on the latest of the player's future.

According to Football Insider, Rangers are now set to make an official bid for Johnson, with the player keen on a move to Ibrox and reportedly in advanced talks with the Glasgow side.

Johnson scored 12 goals in 33 league appearances last term, registering eight assists for North End.

The Verdict

Johnson is a quality player and he's exactly what Rangers need after a strong start to the season.

He contributed to 20 goals in the Championship last season, which is what he deserved after always knocking on the door and threatening to make an impact in the division.

With only one year left on his contract, North End may need to cash in this summer rather than potentially lose him for free next summer.
