Rangers are preparing a bid for Leeds United target Oli McBurnie, according to a reliable football journalist.

Alan Nixon is reporting that Swansea City are keen to keep McBurnie but a good offer from Rangers could tempt him to Ibrox.

The 21-year-old is out-of-contract at Swansea and he would command a compensation fee this summer, given that he is under the age of 23 and has been offered a new deal by the Welsh outfit.

With Swansea's relegation looming, they want to keep their young striker at the club following his impressive performances on loan at Barnsley in the second half of the season.

The Scotland international scored nine goals in 16 starts for the Tykes, but it was all in vain as they were relegated to League One on the final day of the season.

The Leeds-born attacker, who started in the Whites academy, is a major target for Paul Heckingbottom, who signed him while at Barnsley.

It was believed that McBurnie was keen on snubbing a new deal at Swansea to force a move back to Leeds.

But now Rangers have entered the race and are ready to make a bid for the 6ft 2in centre-forward, who is a massive Gers fan.

The Verdict

McBurnie faces a difficult decision here with three appealing options on the table.

He can commit his future to Swansea, who want to keep him and would build a Championship team around him, but he is likely to be tempted by a return to Elland Road, where he started his career and where he grew up as a boy.

But a move to Rangers gives him the chance to join his boyhood club, work with Steven Gerrard and probably earn higher wages.
