Rotherham United want to sign Glasgow Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty on loan for the season, according to The Yorkshire Post.

Rangers are willing to let Docherty leave on loan for the season after Steven Gerrard decided he was surplus to requirements for the timebeing.

The 21-year-old joined Rangers last January from Hamilton Academical and played 14 first-team games for the Gers.

Prior to that, the Scotland under-21 international had played over 100 games for Hamilton.

With four years left to run on his current contract, selling him is not an option and Gerrard wants Docherty to gain experience out on loan.

Rotherham are keen on the young midfield man as an alternative to Nottingham Forest's Ryan Yates.

The Millers beat Shrewsbury Town in the play-off final last season to gain promotion to the Championship but now face competition from the defeated finalists in this chase, according to Alan Nixon.

The Verdict

Docherty has a lot of potential, but whether he is ready to start in a Championship midfield just yet is debatable.

If Shrewsbury land him, that would be somewhat of a coup for the club.

But it would be a risk for Rotherham - one that either pays off and aids their survival hopes or one that backfires.
