Portsmouth are closing in on a deal for a Rangers midfielder, according to respected journalist Andrew Moon.

Ross McCrorie, 21, is allegedly heading down to Portsmouth to seal a season-long loan move to the League One club.

According to the report, the clubs are currently working out whether there will be a potential option or obligation to buy at the end of the deal.

The defensive midfielder is contracted until 2022.

Last season, McCrorie played 31 times in all competitions, without scoring or assisting.

Despite being a fringe player at such a young age, Gerrard said that McCrorie would be struggling if he wanted to be playing this season, especially with the latest arrivals in centre midfield, such as former Charlton player Joe Aribo, according to the Daily Record.

They also have many other options in Jack, Arfield ,Coulibaly, Davis and Kamara - so it will be hard to shoehorn him in the side.

The Verdict

Ross McCrorie seems like a sensible signing for Portsmouth, who will be getting a player who has decent experience in the SPL - a level fairly similar to League One.

Gerrard clearly doesn't fancy him enough to keep him there, but he has been fancied by managers previous to him so I think it's clear he's got solid potential.

It's a low risk deal, and if they can sort a potential future transfer if it goes well then it could be smart business for Pompey.
