Jermain Defoe looks set to end his playing career with Rangers after he signed a new one-year contract with the Scottish champions.

The 38-year-old's previous deal was set to expire this summer and after featuring in just 15 league games last season, with the majority of those appearances coming from the bench, it had been thought that Defoe could move on, with Ipswich Town suggested as a potential destination.

The Tractor Boys, who are under new ownership, have bold plans moving forward and they are expected to be very active in the market as they look to win promotion back to the Championship under Paul Cook.

However, Defoe won't be joining, as the Glasgow outfit announced this afternoon that the striker had agreed to stay on for another 12 months, which will see him now become a player-coach at Ibrox, working alongside Gers boss and his ex-England teammate Steven Gerrard.

Given his age, that could be Defoe's last year as a player, with the prospect of becoming a full-time coach surely on the cards after this update.

The verdict

This is a shame for Ipswich, and fans of any other EFL club, as Defoe still looks sharp and could have a lot to offer, particularly in League On.

But, financially it was always going to be difficult for this deal to be done and the player also appears to be very happy in Scotland, where he is an influential figure, even if he doesn't always play.

So, overall, you'd have to say that this makes sense and Defoe will be relishing the chance to try and help Rangers retain the title next season as well as helping the other strikers develop.
