Steven Gerrard's Rangers look set to win the battle to sign Charlton Athletic midfielder Joe Aribo, according to a report in the Scottish Sun.

Aribo is out of contract with the Addicks and despite winning promotion to the Championship, he is thought to be keen on moving on from the club as he seeks to further develop his career.

The 22-year-old was one of the standout performers for Lee Bowyer's men last season, but it is believed that both Glasgow clubs want to sign him, a move which has forced Aribo into thinking his future lies away from the Valley.

However, it is looking increasingly likely that Steven Gerrard has won the race ahead of Celtic to convince Aribo to make the move to Ibrox.

Aribo fired in 10 goals last season for the Addicks as they overcame Sunderland in the play-off final to cement their place back in the English second tier, with the 22-year-old finally cementing himself as a key cog in the Addicks side after moving to the club in 2015 from non-league Staines Town.

Charlton were hoping to see Aribo move to another English club if he does decide to leave, with Addicks recruitment chief Steve Gallen admitting the club won't be compensated if he moves to Scotland.

The Verdict

It's a bitter blow this is for Charlton after the euphoria of winning promotion to the Championship.

Aribo would have been crucial to them, but he seems to have his heart set on a move away.

Make no mistake about it, Steven Gerrard definitely has a lure about him, and he keeps on proving it by getting players like Aribo to join him in Glasgow.
