Rangers are rivalling a number of Championship clubs in the race to sign Airdrieonians striker Thomas Robert according to Football Insider.

Robert (who is the son of Newcastle legend, Laurent) decided to join the Scottish outfit in the summer, after turning down a number of offers from clubs in high divisions.

That decision has seemingly paid off though, with the forward scoring three goals and two assists in nine appearances for the Scottish League One club in all competitions this term.

But it appears as though that impressive run of form hasn't gone unnoticed, with Rangers being one of the favourites to land his signature.

Robert's agent Paul Tait has reportedly already been in contact with clubs in both Scotland and England over a potential move ahead of the January transfer window.

Robert has been used as a forward in recent weeks, and has scored in his last three matches for Airdrieonians, which has heightened interest in his services heading towards the New Year.

It was previously reported that Robert was attracting interest from the likes of Newcastle United, Rangers and Celtic during the summer, although a move failed to materialise, as he went in search of regular game time elsewhere.

Laurent is set to return to action this weekend with Airdrieonians, when they take on East Fife on Saturday.

Whilst Rangers will be hoping they can continue to build on their hugely impressive start to this year's campaign, when they take on Ross County.

The Verdict:

This could be a smart bit of business.

Robert has caught the eye with a number of strong performances for Airdrieonians this season, and I'm not surprised to hear that he's attracting interest from elsewhere.

You would imagine that he could be worth a punt for a number of Championship clubs this season, but it could be tough for them to beat Rangers in the race to land his signature.

Steven Gerrard's side have been brilliant this season ,and Robert will surely be tempted by a move to Ibrox in the near future.
