Sheffield Wednesday and Rangers are said to be interested in signing out-of-contract winger, Stewart Downing according to Keith Downie.

The Sky Sports journalist also claims that Blackburn Rovers are keeping tabs on the former England winger, who has recently been released by Middlesbrough.

Downing made 38 league appearances in total for Boro last season, as they missed out on a top six finish in the Championship.

This meant that a summer rebuild was likely to take place which led to Downing heading for the exit door at The Riverside.

It will come as no surprise to see Sheffield Wednesday listed as one of the teams interesting in signing Downing as they could certainly benefit from having additional depth in wide areas next season.

Downing would give them that as well, and could be the ideal midfielder to provide the likes of Lucas Joao and Fernando Forestieri with the service they’ve been crying out for recently.

But with Rangers also interested in signing the experienced winger, it remains to be seen as to who will emerge as the frontrunner to land Downing’s signature.

The Verdict:

Sheffield Wednesday and Blackburn will do well to fend off interest from Rangers to this signing.

Downing is an experienced player who could certainly be a useful player to have in the Championship for a couple more years.

He’ll be keen to have his future resolved at the earliest of opportunities so that he can prepare for next year’s campaign.
