Scottish Premier League side Rangers have joined arch rivals Celtic in the race to sign Wigan Athletic star Nick Powell, according to reports from The Scottish Sun.

The 24-year old is out of contract at the DW Stadium at the end of the current campaign, with the Latics undoubtedly looking to keep hold of their midfield star.

But Paul Cook's men will reportedly face strong competition in their quest to tie the playmaker down to a new deal - Steven Gerrard's Gers have joined the race to land the midfielder on a pre-contract deal, with Brendan Rodgers' Celtic also previously declaring an interest as well as RB Leipzig and Brighton and Hove Albion.

Former Manchester United man Powell has been in impressive form for the Latics this season, scoring four goals and producing four assists for a struggling Wigan side. The attacking midfielder also scored 15 goals in 45 games for the club last season, as they won promotion from League One.

After a 1-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend, Wigan currently sit 20th in the Sky Bet Championship table, six points clear of the relegation zone after just one win in their last nine league games.

The Verdict

I think Powell will definitely be on his way out of the DW Stadium this month.

With a host of high-profile clubs after his signature, his head has got to be turned, especially with Wigan struggling at the bottom end of the table.

What a fantastic piece of business it would be if Rangers can land him on a free transfer.
