Steven Gerrard is hoping to sign Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton as he looks to build a new-look Rangers squad but could face competition from Middlesbrough.

The full-back, who can operate on either flank, is out of contract in the coming weeks and seems certain to leave the West Midlands given Villa's dire financial situation.

Therefore, they are in no position to offer him a new deal and he is sure to be released, although it will be no reflection of his performances, with Hutton enjoying a very strong season.

Given that, there is unsurprisingly a lot of interest in the player, with Birmingham Live reporting that Middlesbrough and Rangers both want to sign the 33-year old.

Boro saw first-hand how good Hutton can be, with the Scotland international nullifying the threat of Adama Traore when the sides met in the play-off semi-final last month.

However, a return to Rangers may appeal for the Glasgow-born defender, who made over 100 appearances for his boyhood club at the start of his career.

The Verdict

People have doubted Hutton over the past few years but he has kept proving them wrong and he was superb for Villa last season.

He still has the athleticism to play at a high level and is a very clever defender, whilst also energetic in getting forward.

Hutton would be a fine signing for Rangers or Boro but the Scottish side surely hold the advantage given his connections with the club.
