Rangers face transfer tussle with Championship club in race to sign 24-year-old star

Will Vaulks is a summer target of Sheffield United and Rangers, according to The Daily Mail.

The midfielder has played a key role in Rotherham’s charge for the League One play-offs with 40 league appearances as well as three goals.

Rotherham are currently in fourth place with a seven-point gap on Portsmouth in seventh place and four games remaining.

His contract runs out in 2019 because he is yet to extend it after signing a three-year contract when he joined from Falkirk in 2016.

Therefore, teams such as Sheffield united have sensed an opportunity to bring him in with the Millers likely to sell him rather than losing him for free in 2019.

The Verdict

Chris Wilder seems to like picking up bargains from League One and appears to have no intention of stopping that even though the Blades are now a top half team in the Championship.

Vaulks is an industrious midfielder with defensive midfield his preferred role, so Wilder would likely use him as an anchor in front of his defence.

He has experience in a two-man midfield as well as a three-man midfield this season for Rotherham, which means he is versatile. However, he can also play as a right-back or a centre-back, so he is the ideal player to bring in for additional squad depth with Wilder intending to build on this impressive season.

This is another example of Wilder picking players for a specific role in the team rather than trying to force in star names, and that approach has worked wonders so far.
