Glasgow Rangers are ready to move for Millwall defender Jake Cooper, according to a report by The Daily Mail.

Cooper has established himself as one of the most solid defenders in the Championship and has now caught the eye of Steven Gerrard.

The new Rangers manager is eyeing Cooper as a replacement for Portugal international Bruno Alves, who is joining Parma in Serie A.

The former Reading defender is likely to cost Rangers a seven-figure sum to land.

Cooper joined Millwall from Reading on loan in January 2017 and played a starring role as they won promotion to the Championship.

Last summer, the 23-year-old penned a permanent deal with the Lions, signed a three-year contract, and he was vitally important as they shocked most people to launch a play-off bid.

Millwall are desperate to keep Cooper, who formed a formidable partnership with Shaun Hutchinson at the back, but have signed centre-half Murray Wallace from Scunthorpe United.

Neil Harris' men now face a battle to keep the former England under-20 man at the New Den beyond the summer transfer window as Rangers consider a swoop.

The Verdict

Losing Cooper would be a major blow for Millwall.

The towering centre-half suits their style of play as he is physical, dominant in the air and a real threat from set pieces.

His partnership with Hutchinson is one of the most underrated pairings in the division and formed the solid foundation for their success last term; losing him would mean that Wallace has a major role to play and big boots to fill.
