Joey Barton is close to turning his back on English football after he gave Glasgow giants Rangers a verbal agreement over a two-year deal, according to The Scottish Sun.
Rangers were promoted back to the Scottish Premier League last season and boss Mark Warburton has pulled off a major coup in securing the services of the combative midfielder.
Barton was in sensational form last season for Sky Bet Championship outfit Burnley and was rewarded for his superb season by winning the club’s Player of the Year award, with the team winning the league to gain promotion to the Premier League.
The move does come as a bit of a surprise as the Clarets offered the former Queens Park Rangers man a new one-year contract, although he appears to have rejected it following talks with Warburton and his coaching staff.
Rangers will go head-to-head with Celtic next season as the old firm renew their fierce rivalry and Barton will undoubtedly relish those fixtures during the 2016/17 campaign.
