Former West Brom defender Gareth McAuley is set to sign for Scottish Premier League side Rangers in the coming days according to manager Steven Gerrard, report the Birmingham Mail.

The 38-year-old has been a free agent since leaving the Baggies at the end of last season after seven years with the club.

Gerrard was speaking after Rangers' 1-0 defeat in the Old Firm derby against Celtic on Sunday and told reporters that McAuley is expected to sign 'in the coming days'.

The centre-back moved from Ipswich Town to the Hawthorns in 2011 on a free transfer and went on to make 227 appearances for the West Midlands club.

He was released along with Claudio Yacob, James Morrison and Boaz Myhill as Darren Moore looked to freshen up his squad, although Myhill was later brought back to the club and Morrison was handed an extended deal.

The verdict

There is very little doubt that McAuley is in the twilight of his career, in fact, it is incredible that he is still playing so well at 38.

He will be a great addition to Steven Gerrard's side and be a real leader on and off the pitch, something the Gers arguably lack at the moment.

The defender arguably had his best few seasons over the last few years so they definitely are not signing a completely past it pro by any means.
