Newcastle United have initiated talks with Chelsea as Rafa Benitez considers taking Ghanaian winger Christian Atsu to St James’ Park, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Dowie.
Following the disappointing news that Rolando Aarons would be sidelined for eight weeks after suffering a metatarsal injury against Cheltenham Town in the EFL Cup, Newcastle’s need to sign a winger before the transfer window closes has become even more significant.
As the summer transfer window has rolled on, Newcastle United have been linked with a number of wingers, over the past week.
Atsu becomes the latest name to be linked with the Toon Army this month after reports emerged earlier this week that the club were interested in signing Olympique Marseille winger Romain Alessandrini.
Rafa Benitez may be hoping to use his connections with Chelsea to persuade the West London club to choose Newcastle as Atsu’s next loan location.
If Newcastle United were to sign the 24-year-old winger temporarily, they will face fierce competition as Serie A side Torino are also reportedly interested in the Ghanaian international.
