Derby County made the decision to sack Phillip Cocu earlier this month and they have still not announced his successor.

A host of names have been linked with the vacancy, ranging from former boss John Gregory to Champions League winner Rafa Benitez.

However, no individual appears to have emerged as a leading candidate and more important off-field issues will have to be sorted before a new boss is appointed.

That's because owner Mel Morris is in advanced takeover talks with Sheikh Khaled about a deal to sell the club to the Abu Dhabi royal family member.

With the EFL approving the takeover earlier this month, it's a matter of time before it's officially confirmed, and the first task for the new boss will be to find a manager.

Surprisingly, Benitez remains one of the favourites for the job, although Spanish reporter Guillem Balague emphatically dismissed the idea that the former Real Madrid boss could end up at Pride Park.

Another name that has been mentioned is Steve Cooper, the current Swansea boss. He has done very well with the Welsh club since taking over, so his arrival would excite fans, but updates have claimed that the 'seven-figure fee' required to take him from the Swans is problematic.

Wayne Rooney and Liam Rosenior have been part of the setup that are leading the team following Cocu's sacking, and both would love the top job. They remain options, although a lack of experience on both parts is a concern, whilst they didn't boost their prospects as the team lost to Bristol City on Saturday.

Ultimately, it still remains unclear as to who will land the top job at Derby County. The speculation is sure to continue in the coming days but no decision is likely until Sheikh Khaled takes over.

In the meantime, Derby's plight becomes more concerning. They are bottom of the Championship, winning once all season, and need more stability to be able to push on.
