Sky Bet Championship outfit Newcastle United will turn their attentions towards the EFL Cup tomorrow evening when they travel to Hull City knowing that a win would secure a quarter-final berth.

The Magpies suffered a rare defeat on Saturday as a late Charlie Mulgrew goal consigned them towards an unexpected 1-0 defeat at the hands of Blackburn Rovers.

Rafa Benitez is likely to make some changes to his side for the visit to the KC Stadium. His high-flying side play Nottingham Forest in the league on Friday night and with promotion the main priority this season, the league fixture is expected to be prioritised.

Following such a shock defeat, boss Benitez could be tempted to drop a couple of players who looked somewhat out of sorts against Rovers at the weekend.

Football League World writer Lee Clarke takes a look at two players who Benitez must drop for Tuesday night's cup match.

Aleksandar Mitrovic

The Serbian striker endured a disappointing afternoon in attack for the Magpies on Saturday, failing to register a single shot at Jason Steele's goal all afternoon.

With Dwight Gayle left on the bench, it represented Mitrovic with a huge chance to stake his claim for a more frequent place in the side, but duly fluffed his lines.

The Serb has done alright so far this season but he must start to gain more consistency in front of goal, if he is to oust other strikers from the team in future.

Chancel Mbemba

The strong defender looked shaky on occasions during Saturday's defeat and showed signs of rustiness, following a period of inactivity sat on the Newcastle United bench.

The 22-year-old looks to have a bright future ahead of him at St. James' Park but it is probable that he will miss out against Hull City on Tuesday, with other defenders likely to return to the team.

Mbemba will undoubtedly have a part to play for the Magpies over the remainder of the season, but his poor performance at the weekend will not have gone unnoticed by the management.

Newcastle United fans, do you agree that these two should be dropped on Tuesday night? Who else should be in the firing line, following the weekend defeat? Let us know in the comments below!!!
