The future of Newcastle United defender Massadio Haidara has been cast into serious doubt after he revealed that Rafa Benitez has told him that there is no space in the first team, according to The Shields Gazette.

Massadio Haidara has struggled for much of this season with injuries but he is now back to fitness.

However, the Frenchman has only managed two appearances this season, both coming in the FA Cup.

Since joining in January 2013, Haidara has only managed 51 appearances in all competitions in over four years.

Naturally a left back, he has had to play second fiddle to Paul Dummett for much of this campaign.

After returning from injury in January, the 24-year-old admitted to being frustrated at his lack of first team action.

Haidara also claimed that Benitez told him that "some players must stay away from the first team".

The former Nancy defender is however confident that he will be ready to stake his claim in the first team if called upon.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with the Shields Gazette, Massadio Haidara said:

"He has told me that he cannot play everyone and that some players must stay away from the first-team.

“But there are many games left until May and who knows if I will get my chance.

"Either way I will be ready if I am needed."
