Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has stressed Dwight Gayle’s importance as the prolific striker offers a different dimension to Aleksandar Mitrovic and Daryl Murphy, according to The Sunderland Echo.
While Mitrovic and Murphy are more suited to the “target man” role, Gayle is more nippy, speedy and creative.
Rafa Benitez explained:
“It’s important for the team – we needed to have another kind of striker.
The two players (Mitrovic and Murphy) can hold the ball up or be a target man, and he’s someone that can run and create his own chances and take chances.”
Dwight Gayle scored his 20th goal of the season last month but suffered a hamstring injury in the same game which has kept him sidelined for a while.
The former Crystal Palace striker made his comeback with a 15 minute cameo during the 2-2 draw with Norwich and could start against Aston Villa in the Championship clash on Monday night.
