Andrea Radrizzani has revealed that Leeds United were happy to keep hold of Rob Green during the summer transfer window, but it was the player who ultimately decided to move on from Elland Road.

Green was a key figure for Leeds last season under Garry Monk, but following Thomas Christiansen’s arrival it became apparent that he was not automatically first choice, with Felix Wiedwald starting the season as number one.

The goalkeeper made a switch across West Yorkshire, moving back to the Premier League with Huddersfield Town, who he is yet to make an appearance for this season.

Radrizzani has been answering questions from Leeds’ supporters this lunchtime, and was faced with a question about Green, with fans frustrated by Wiedwald’s recent involvement at Elland Road and wanting to know who sanctioned Green’s move.

The Leeds owner told fans that Green wanted guarantees of first-team football, before citing that the 38-year-old hadn’t played much football for his new employers, as reported by Phil Hay from the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Wiedwald has remained number one at Elland Road for large parts of the season, with Andy Lonergan, the man signed to replace Green, limited to very few opportunities under Christiansen and his successor, Paul Heckingbottom.

The Verdict

The decision to sell Green in the summer was bizarre, as the former England goalkeeper had been magnificent at Elland Road last season.

With hindsight, Leeds will wish that they retained the service of Green, as they have struggled with goalkeeping problems over the course of the season.

Radrizzani has done well to clarify Leeds’ stance over Green, although his departure remains a bitter pill to swallow.
