Andrea Radrizzani has backed Paul Heckingbottom to be a good coach for Leeds United.

Following Thomas Christiansen’s sacking in early 2018, Heckingbottom was turned to with the hope he could resurrect a faltering play-off push at Elland Road.

Ultimately that hasn’t proved to be the case, with Heckingbottom picking up just one victory in his first seven fixtures at the helm and just six points from a possible 21.

Despite an indifferent start to life at Elland Road, Radrizzani has handed Heckingbottom his backing, but insisted that he hopes the 40-year-old can get better results.

Phil Hay from the Yorkshire Evening Post has been sharing updates from Radrizzani’s interview with talkSPORT, including his thoughts on Heckingbottom:

Leeds’ sole victory in 2018 came against Brentford in late February, where Heckingbottom masterminded a 1-0 victory over the Bees thanks to Liam Cooper’s headed goal.

Back-to-back defeats against Middlesbrough and Wolves followed, which sparked an angry reaction from Radrizzani, who was heavily critical of the latter for their recruitment strategy.

However, Leeds restored some pride with a battling display against Reading on Saturday to secure a 2-2 draw.

Heckingbottom will be looking for his second victory as Leeds’ head-coach on Saturday, when Sheffield Wednesday visit for a Yorkshire derby.

The Verdict

Radrizzani is obviously pleased with part of Heckingbottom’s role since his arrival, however, there is still obvious problems at Elland Road.

Leeds are in a terrible run of form, which doesn’t look like turning around anytime soon.

Last weekend’s fixture with Reading would’ve been a game Radrizzani expected to win, and he will have been frustrated by the 2-2 draw.
