According to a transfer report in the Yorkshire Evening Post, as many as six Sky Bet Championship clubs are now in the race to sign Adam Clayton, including a handful of Middlesbrough’s play-off rivals.

Clayton has fallen out of favour at the Riverside Stadium this season, failing to establish himself in the first-team under Garry Monk, before missing out on Tony Pulis’ first two matchday squads following his appointment at Middlesbrough.

The 28-year-old has made just 13 Championship appearances for eighth placed Boro this season, with the last of those appearances coming in late November’s defeat to Derby County.

The majority of clubs to show an interest in the midfielder are rivalling Boro for promotion in the Championship this season, including Derby.

Leeds United are also keen on a reunion with Clayton, who spent time at Elland Road earlier in his career, whilst Cardiff City, Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday and Aston Villa have also been credited with interest.

Clayton came through Manchester City’s academy, before making a move to Leeds.

After loan spells with Peterborough and MK Dons, Clayton established himself in Leeds’ first-team, before making a move to Huddersfield Town and then Middlesbrough, who he helped to promotion back in 2016.

The Verdict

The type of clubs interested in taking Clayton off Middlesbrough’s hands tells you all you need to know about the player, who has exceptional talent.

Clayton is amongst the most capable Championship midfielders, and he would improve most clubs in the division.

Boro’s use of Clayton this season has been a surprise, and it remains to be seen whether they consider letting the midfielder join a direct rival.
