In a statement on the QPR website, the R’s confirmed that the 22-year-old defender has put pen to paper on a new long term deal at the club.

Furlong stated: “I am delighted. No contract is more special than the one you’re signing now and having been since I was ten it means a lot.

“Contracts aren’t just given to you, you have to work hard to earn them. You can’t take it for granted and already I’m thinking about what I need to do to earn the next one."

The Englishman made 22 appearances in all competitions last season, contributing with one goal from defence, and helped QPR to a 16th place finish in the Championship table, but suffered a torn knee ligament last month.

QPR head coach Steve McClaren stated: “Darnell fully deserves this new deal and I am delighted for him.

“He is a huge asset to the club and when he is back and available it will feel like a new signing to us.”

The Verdict

The length of Darnell Furlong’s injury absence will have to wait and see, but knowing they have him to come back will give the QPR fans something to look forward to.

Steve McClaren will have a tough job this season, with other sides strengthening their squads greatly, but will just have to hope he can do enough for his side.

Furlong is a strong option at the back, and having him for a further three years is only a positive.
