Queens Park Rangers could be about to lose both Paul Smyth and Matt Smith on loan in the coming week, with both players out of favour under Steve McClaren.

McClaren has done a fine job turning QPR’s season around after a very poor start, with the R’s now comfortable in the Championship and looking up rather than down.

Neither Smyth nor Smith have been heavily involved in that, with West London Sport reporting that both could be on the move before the end of the January transfer window.

The report claims that Smyth, 21, has a string of clubs chasing his signature, whilst Championship rivals Millwall are prepared to offer Smith, 29, a route across London as he searches for more regular football.

The younger of the two players, Smyth, has been limited to only five appearances for the R’s this season, finding himself down the pecking order.

Similarly, Smith has struggled for regular minutes, with Nahki Wells amongst the attacking talent available to McClaren at Loftus Road.

The towering forward has made 22 appearances, but only one of those has come in the starting XI this season. Smith has returned two goals too, with the last of those coming in last weekend’s heavy defeat to Preston North End.

The Verdict

It’s not really a surprise to learn that these two players could be moving out of QPR in the coming week.

Both will feel they are better than a place on the bench week after week, with Smyth in particular needing regular game time for his development as a player.

Smith, on the other hand, will be aware his chance of regular football might be better with Millwall, who have struggled for numbers in attack.
