Queens Park Rangers forward Paul Smyth is attracting interest this summer, with Wycombe Wanderers keen on signing him on loan ahead of the new season.

According to West London Sport, Gareth Ainsworth wants to raid his former club and take Smyth away from Loftus Road, with the 22-year-old way down the pecking order as the likes of Eberechi Eze strut their stuff.

Smyth has made 19 appearances across all competitions during his time in and around the QPR first-team, with the Northern Irishman returning two Championship goals in that time, one of which came on his debut in a 2-1 win over Cardiff City in January 2018.

There was a loan move for Smyth during the second-half of the campaign gone by, with the young forward making 15 League One appearances for Accrington Stanley, with three goals returned.

Although Smyth is attracting interest from Wycombe, it is worth noting that the R’s are short of attacking options, which will be a concern to Mark Warburton with the season fast approaching.

A separate report from West London Sport links the R’s with a move for outcast West Ham United forward, Jordan Hugill.

Hugill was on loan at Middlesbrough last season and previously excelled in the Championship with Preston North End.

The Verdict

First and foremost, it is vital that QPR get some attacking players through the door before allowing Smyth to exit.

Warburton has done some good work in the transfer window so far, but he needs to make sure he’s got enough attackers on the books to ensure the R’s start the season strongly.

For me, Smyth should be allowed to leave the club, and a year with Wycombe could do wonders for his development, particularly under a manager like Ainsworth.

However, as mentioned, there’s a need for QPR to get their house in order before that can happen.
