Birmingham City look set to pull off a big transfer coup with the signing of Alen Halilovic, according to a Croatian newspape Sportske Novosti.

The 24-year-old midfielder has been a free-agent since he parted ways mutually with Italian giants A.C. Milan on October 5.

Halilovic has been training with Croatian side Inter Zapresic recently, and has been linked to Hajduk Split in his home nation and Brazilian side Vasco da Gama.

But it's looking likely that the 'Second City' will be his next destination, and he's dropped a major hint that it could be announced shortly by following Birmingham's Instagram account recently.

Halilovic made his debut for Croatia at the age of just 16, not long after breaking through into the Dinamo Zagreb first team, and his performances there secured a move to Spanish powerhouse Barcelona.

He's not really lived up to the early hype though, going out on loan to various teams when at both Barca and A.C. Milan, but he will be looking to make up for lost time at St. Andrews if this deal goes ahead.

He'd be joining fellow Croat Ivan Sunjic at the club and alongside Spanish international Mikel San Jose, it would create one of the Championship's most talented midfield trifectas.

Needless to say Birmingham fans on Twitter are very excited at the prospect of seeing Halilovic flourish under Aitor Karanka, although not everyone is sharing the same positivity.
