After a bitterly disappointing 2015/16, Leeds United fans will have been desperate to see progression and a busy summer transfer window.

A 13th place finish is not what they will have wanted but under Garry Monk hopes will have been higher heading into the new campaign.

Plenty of new faces did arrive. 12 in total, including the likes of Pontus Jansson, Pablo Hernandez, Luke Ayling and Kyle Bartley.

But in a busy transfer period, the dealing out of a new deal was somewhat lost in the chaos.

This is FLW Rewind, where we take a look back at a big decision made by a club, analyse the initial reaction and document what happened next.

The player in question this time is midfielder Kalvin Phillips, who committed to a new three-year deal at the club in the summer.

The then 20-year-old had made ten appearances in the previous campaign, impressing in flashes, but leaving others unconvinced.

Here is what the fans had to say at the time:

So, a few doubters were lingering, so it was now up to Phillips to prove them wrong.

And he has done so emphatically. Since signing that new deal, the defensive midfielder has become a mainstay in the club’s starting XI, racking up over 100 appearances in the following seasons.

He turned out 33 times under Monk and helped the Whites to a seventh place finish in that campaign, and remains a favourite of Marcelo Bielsa’s as they chase promotion to the Premier League again.
