Charlie Austin has opened up on the hilarious interaction he had with Everton defender Lucas Digne in midweek.

Austin's QPR faced Digne's Everton in the third round of the Carabao Cup, with both players scoring in what turned out to be an entertaining 2-2 draw.

Austin netted a brace either side of Digne's goal on the half-hour mark, with Andros Townsend netting an equaliser just after the interval.

During a dramatic Carabao Cup tie, Austin and Digne participated in a war of words, with the latter having a dig at Austin's lack of international caps.

The 42-time France international, as revealed by Austin on talkSPORT, said: "It was just a bit of fun. He gave me a little bit.

"In the first half he was on about me fouling him and he just turned around and said ‘how many caps you got?’.

"I had a little giggle to myself and I didn’t mind it. Then in the second half the ball came over the top and took about six or seven seconds to come down, he went to control it and shinned it out of play.

"I just laughed in his face."

QPR ended up winning 8-7 in a dramatic penalty shootout, and will now face Sunderland in the fourth round of the competition.

In terms of league action, the R's travel to face West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns this evening.

The Verdict

Austin was superb in midweek, and despite Digne's dig, the striker had the last laugh.

He is an older, wiser head who has plenty of experience and he has excellent quality at Championship level.

He will hope that he can now kick on and add to his tally in the league, rather than in the Carabao Cup.
