QPR have continued their active start to the summer transfer window and signed Conor Masterson after his contract expired with Liverpool.

The 20-year-old central defender arrives at Loftus Road on a two-year deal.

The Irishman joined the Premier League club at the age of 16 and was the captain of the under-18 side, before progressing through the under-23s.

He was named on the bench for first-team fixtures against Manchester City and Everton but has never made a senior appearance for the North West club.

Masterson was due to travel to America on the first-team's pre-season tour last summer but was ruled out of the trip by a knee injury.

Speaking to QPR.co.uk, he said: "You have your ups and downs in football. [Missing the pre-season tour due to injury] was my down and hopefully this move is one of my ups.

“I can guarantee the fans I will give everything in every game.”

R's manager Mark Warburton told QPR.co.uk: "I have watched Conor’s progress and he is another young player with a lot of potential in him.

“What he will be looking to do is come in, bed himself into the dressing room and challenge for a place in the team."

Verdict

Warburton made it clear when he arrived at the club that he wanted to be active in this transfer window and he has done exactly that–this is the seventh arrival of the summer.

This is a really interesting signing. Masterson was unfortunate to miss the first-team pre-season tour at Liverpool and saw his chance of establishing himself at Anfield slip away after that.

He is a young defender with potential, as evidenced by his reported €1 million price tag at the age of 13 and the rumoured interest of Premier League-bound Norwich City earlier this year.

If he is given time and opportunities to develop and nurture at Loftus Road this could be an excellent move by the London club that they see the benefits from for years to come.
