Queens Park Rangers are set to launch a move for Barnsley defender Liam Lindsay but will have to pay the £4 million asking price, reports the Daily Record's live blog (23/08, 13:21).

The centre-back is thought to have peaked the interest of Steve McClaren after his side shipped 13 goals in their first four Championship fixtures.

McClaren is also not put off by the large asking price for Lindsay either.

Barnsley paid just £350,000 to Motherwell for the 22-year-old a year ago but will owe the Scottish club 10% of any fee they get for him.

Over the summer, QPR saw their defensive position weaken as Jack Robinson and Nedum Onuoha both departed the club for nothing.

Toni Leistner was brought in from Union Berlin but has so far struggled to make much of an impact.

If the Rs were to sign Lindsay, it would have to be as a loan with a view to signing him permanently next summer due to a transfer embargo that will hit the club in January.

The verdict

This is the exact sort of sensible signing that QPR should have made at the start of the summer.

Onouha and Robinson have not been adequately replaced and that has been the club's biggest problem so far.

Lindsay would slot straight into the squad and do a very good job.
